Sausage Roll

Well great news everyone . . . WE HAVE INTERNET AT HOME!!!!! I know its shocking that after living here for 6 weeks we are finally connected with the rest of the world! Now that we have internet, the blog is going to be filled with whatever random thoughts I have that I think others might be interested in. I hope that you all enjoy it.

Here is a random posting for the day.

Some people have asked me what the food is like here. So far I have to say it has been fine . . . nothing compared to our fine cuisine in the South . . . but good enough to eat and enjoy. We have discovered that "Sausage Rolls" are a common menu item, available at all deli's, lunch spots, and even pre-made in the grocery store. What do you think of when you read the term "Sausage Roll"? Well, we have found that it can mean a variety of things. Often it is served much like our "Pig in a Blanket" in the South, with a sausage link inside of some form of pastry like a biscuit. It is typically quite tasty and a good breakfast item.

About a week after we got here, Ian was asked by one of his coworkers if he would like a Sausage Roll for breakfast from the sandwich cart down the street. Well you all know that Ian is up for trying any foods so of course he agreed. Ian had already experienced the Sausage Roll in the form of our Pig in a Blanket while in Scotland, so this is what he was expected. Upon arrival, he learned that Sausage Roll is used in very loose terms here and can be interpretted in many different ways. What he received was a seasame seed hamburger bun with link sausages cut length wise down the center and smacked between the bun! He was surprised so much that he took a picture of it so that he could show it to me when he got home. Ian did say that although the Sausage Roll was not what he expected, he did enjoy it very much!

Lesson learned: don't have any expectations of what a Sausage Roll is whilst in Scotland!

  1. Well done for trying our ever so crazy food Ian! Next time you have to have 'The Beast' which is Bacon, Sausage & Egg with ketchup and brown sauce - all in a roll (hamburger bun to you). :) Caroline
